SOFTBALL

The Moundridge Softball team had five games between April 7-11, going 2-3 during that stretch against tough opponents.

The team started at home against Sterling Monday, April 7, splitting against the Black Bears winning 17-2 in game one and falling 19-9 in game two. Game two saw the Wildcats struggle defensively with eight errors, but the offense in both games were fantastic with 21 combined hits. Just one day later, the team faced Hillsboro in a single game and earned the victory 8-3. The offense had eight hits including three doubled and a home run. Lela Winsor pitched the full game, striking out six batters.

The team concluded the week with a road doubleheader against one of the best teams in the state with the Inman Teutons. Moundridge’s offense got on base, but left multiple players on base in game one in the 10-0 loss. Inman also capitalized as half of their eight hits were extra-base hits. Game two saw a strong 3rd and 4th innings from Inman as Moundridge fell 18-4. Moundridge started strong with a 4-1 lead after the top of the 3rd inning, but a 10-run 3rd and a 7-run 4th gave Inman a run-rule victory.

The team is 6-4 on the season and will look to bounce back Thursday, April 17 against Bennington.

BASEBALL

The Moundridge Baseball team also five games in the span of a week, but they occurred between April 8-15. The team went 3-2 during that week.

The team also had one game at Hillsboro Tuesday, April 8, but secured an extra-inning thriller against the Trojans 8-6 in 10 innings. Hillsboro had a 4-2 lead after six innings, but the Wildcats had the bases loaded with two outs when Layton Wiens delivered a two-run double to tie the game in the seventh. After allowing a leadoff double in the bottom of the 7th, the team intentionally walked the next batter for a double play opportunity. Finn Lintecum then struck out the next batter, but the two runners on base stole the next, giving another Trojan the intentional pass. However, the runner at third base was picked off and Lintecum struck out the last batter to send the game to extras.

The game was still tied after nine innings, but Lintecum pulled through in the 10th, delivering an RBI single to give Moundridge a 5-4 lead. Three batters later with two outs and the bases loaded, a fielding error by Hillsboro emptied the bases to score three runs and make it 8-4. Hillsboro did not give up without a fight, as two runs scored with two outs and the bases loaded, but a groundout ended the game with the 8-6 Moundridge victory.

Moundridge got the much needed two days of rest before facing Inman on the road Friday, April 11, splitting against the Teutons. Inman dominated from the beginning in game one and Moundridge struggled with six defensive errors, falling 13-1 in five innings. Game two was a different story for the Wildcats as their offense had 12 hits and capitalized on nine Inman errors, giving them a 13-7 win to avoid the sweep.

The team had another doubleheader Tuesday, April 15 on the road against Marion. Game one saw Marion put up four early runs after two innings. Moundridge held Marion for the next four innings, but only put two on the board losing 6-2 in the contest. Game two saw a high-octane offensive thriller as Moundridge won 13-12. The Wildcats had a 6-0 lead after the top of the 3rd, but the two teams went back and forth since that point, but Moundridge was just able to hold off Marion in the 7th inning.

The team is 5-4 on the season and will also be in action Thursday, April 17 against Bennington.
