MARION, Kan. – The Moundridge High School Track & Field team competed in the 2A Marion Regional meet Thursday, May 22. 20 total athletes qualified for state as the boys took home the Regional title and the girls took 3rd.
The boys team finished with 99 total points, finishing 29 points ahead of Hutchinson-Trinity Catholic for the top spot. Kaden Elmore won three individual titles in Marion, crossing the finish line first in the 100M, 200M, and 400M Dashes. Henry Hecox won the individual title in the Javelin, beating second place by nearly five feet.
The Moundridge boys placed in the top three in seven other events, automatically qualifying those athletes to state. Heath Churchill finished third in the High Jump, Brayden Elmore took 2nd in the Pole Vault, and Kaizer Kanitz finished 2nd in the Triple Jump for the Wildcats’ field events. Churchill also finished 2nd in the 300M Hurdles. Dan Kuder took 2nd in the 800M Run to qualify for the event in State.
The boys 4x100M Relay team (Bear Moddelmog, Kaden Elmore, Kanitz, Brayden Elmore) finished in 3rd to automatically qualify. The same went for the team’s 4x800M Relay team (Reid Graber, Fynn Burge, Andrew Porter, Dan Kuder).
Multiple others qualified thanks to new KSHSAA rules granting athletes a chance to qualify if they had some of the best times in the state outside of the top three finishers in their events. Moddelmog qualified for the Javelin and the 4x400M Relay team qualified despite both finishing in 4th.
The girls team finished 3rd in the meet. The team won two individual championships: The 4x400M Relay and the the Long Jump. Cammi Unruh took home the top spot in the Long Jump for Moundridge. She also helped in the 4x400M Relay, alongside Avery Schrag, Halle Hecox, and Baylee Schriner.
Unruh finished 2nd in the 100M Dash to qualify for the event as well. Aspyn Stos finished 3rd in the Shot Put to qualify for State. Avery Schrag and Baylee Schriner placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the 400M Dash. The 4x100M Relay and 4x800M Relay teams also qualified.
The State Qualifiers will head to Wichita May 30-31 for the State Meet.
