The Hutchinson Monarchs won a high-scoring game Friday at Hobart-Detter Field, scoring the first eight runs before holding off the Derby Twins late in securing a 15-11 win.
The win pushed the Monarchs’ win streak to three and their overall record to 3-2.
The Monarchs blitzed Derby with four runs in each of the first two innings. Sam Wiese belted a two-out, two-run double to start the rally. Cooper Wesslund added a two-run single.
Wiese added another RBI single in the second inning, as did Jaden Gustafson. Austin Coyle and Blake Bradford also provided RBIs.
Derby slowly clawed back in the game. The Twins scored five runs in the third inning one in the fourth and five in the eighth, which closed the Monarchs’ lead to 12-11.
However, Nicky Sackett helped the Monarchs score three runs in the eighth inning with an RBI single. Gustafson had another RBI single.
Gustafson, Wesslund and Camden Johnson led the Monarchs’ 16-hit attack with three apiece. Wiese had four RBIs.
Garrett Folmar was the winning pitcher, throwing 3 2/3 innings in relief. Kamden Edge earned the save by getting the final four outs.
The Monarchs play at Derby on Saturday before coming home Sunday to take on Great Bend.
