Monarchs rout Cannons on road

The Hutchinson Monarchs scored double-digit runs for a second straight game, and the Monarchs completed a season sweep of the Kansas Cannons on Tuesday as the Monarchs won 11-2 in Augusta.

The Monarchs outhit the Cannons 9-6 and took advantage of four walks, four hit by pitches and two Cannons errors.

Down 1-0 in the top of the third inning, Jake Gutierrez reached on an error, which scored Dylan Bell and Jarrett Herrmann.

The next inning, Joey Senstock tripled home Jackson Legg, part of Senstock’s two-hit, four-RBI night. Senstock added a three-run home run in the sixth inning. Senstocjk finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle.

Tyson Vassart led the Monarchs with three hits, Drew Bugner added two hits including a double.

Pryce Bender was the winning pitcher, throwing five innings, giving up one run on four hits. Bryant Siemens pitched two shutout innings in relief, and Whit Rhodes pitched the final two innings, giving up a run on one hit.

The win moved the Monarchs’ overall record to 16-5, and 15-5 in the Jayhawk Collegiate League. They lead the Great Bend Bat Cats by 1 1/2  games and the Derby Twins by two games. The Monarchs return home at 7 p.m. today to take on the Wichita Black Sox in a non-league game.
