Newton’s shut-down pitching performance in the final four innings contributed to the win over Hutchinson. The Monarchs did have the represented go-ahead on base in the 9th inning as the bases were loaded with two outs, but a groundout left all three on base to end the game.

Hutchinson was hit around in the first and second innings to trail 3-0 early, but stormed back in the 3rd on an AJ Mustow RBI double to put them on the board. A subsequent RBI single by Jackson Legg cut it to a one-run game. After Cole Toureau started the game on the hill, the Monarchs brought in Daegan Vinduska in the 4th inning. He ended up throwing 3 1/3 terrific innings.

Mustow followed up in the 5th inning with an RBI single to tie the game after a JJ Spafford double. However, those would be the only hits and the only run given up by Newton pitcher Jeffrey Neill, a Buhler native and Hutchinson Community College baseball player. It would also be the last time the Monarchs had a base hit in the game.

Vinduska would commit an error in the 7th inning with a man on base, which helped Newton score a run in the 7th to take the lead. The Rebels would then get an insurance run with a two-out RBI single in the 8th inning. The Monarchs then loaded the bases in the 9th after Jeter Worthley pinch-hit and reached on an error and Keegan Demmer reached on a walk. After the second out, Joey Stenock loaded the bases with a walk, but Mustow, who had two RBI’s, grounded out to end the game.

The Monarchs are now 13-4 on the season, but still hold 1st place in the Jayhawk Collegiate League by 1.5 games over Great Bend and Derby. The Monarchs will face Derby Fri., June 27 on the road at 7 p.m. before facing them again at home Sat., June 28.
