The Hutchinson Monarchs scored five sixth-inning runs Sunday, breaking open a close game, and the Monarchs shook off Saturday’s lopsided loss by beating the Kansas Cannons 10-5 at Hobart-Detter Field.

The Monarchs held a 4-2 lead going to the sixth inning, feeling similar to the night before when the Monarchs led 4-2 against Derby, and then squandered a chance for a big inning before Derby rallied to win 13-6.

But this time, the Monarchs came through with a big inning. Tyler Mitchell first scored when Jake Gutierrez reached on an error. With one out, Jeter Worthley scored on AJ Mustow’s sacrifice fly. Tyson Vassart followed with a two-run single, and Omare Cross’ single brought in another run.

The Monarchs outhit yet another opponent, this time 10-6. The Monarchs have been outhit just twice this season. Worthley, Blake Bradford and Jake Knox led the way with two hits apiece. Bradford and Knox each had a double.

Bradyn McClure gave the Monarchs seven strong innings on the mound, giving up four runs, two unearned, on five hits. Daegan Vinduska pitched two shutout innings in relief.

The Monarchs improved to 15-5 overall and 14-5 in the Jayhawk Collegiate League. They remain in first place by a game over the Great Bend Bat Cats and two games over Derby. Great Bend has two games in hand on both the Monarchs and Twins.

The Monarchs play next on Tuesday in Augusta against the Cannons.
