MULVANE, Kan. – It was another one-goal match for the McPherson High Girls Soccer team, as they traveled to Mulvane on Tuesday, for their first of four straight road games, where a double overtime clash went to the Wildcats 2-1.
The Bullpups would play with the wind in the first half, getting off to a great start after Addison Shaft found Baylee Simmelink to give MHS a 1-0 lead. “The second half going into the wind is actually when the girls created their best chances of the game to score.” said Head Coach Chris Adrian, who mentioned three or four chances that the Pups could’ve found the back of the net, as they put 11 shots on goal.
“You have to give Mulvane’s goalkeeper a ton of credit,” said Adrian, “She played amazing and made some incredible one-on-one saves to keep the game close.
The Wildcats would tie the game in the second half, but MHS kept creating opportunities, but couldn’t connect with the needed goal, sending the game into overtime. Finally, late in the second overtime, Mulvane would capitalize on a corner kick, striking the game-ending goaland snapping McPherson’s six-game winning-streak, defeating the Bullpups 2-1.
Following the match, Coach Adrian noted, “Games like this show why some people love and hate the game of soccer all at once.” he explained, “You can dominate a game, but still end up on the wrong side of the result.”
“It only takes one shot to win,” said Adrian, who concluded by saying, “This game was a wakeup call for the team and one that I believe will help them refocus as we tackle the second half of our schedule.”
The Lady Pups move to 7-2 overall. On Saturday, they will battle Bishop Miege with a JV match beginning at 11 a.m. The Varsity will follow at 1 p.m.
