STERLING, Kan. (SCWarriors.com) – The Warrior men came from behind and ended the match victorious in a physical contest against the Avila University Eagles. The first half was very physical with 6 yellow cards handed out and after 45 minutes of play, it was 1-0 Avila, having scored the only goal in the 22′.
The second half belonged to Sterling almost immediately. Owning the second half kickoff, Sterling placed the ball almost back to the defending third of the field and Ruben Guzman beautifully kicked a ball beyond the Eagle defense on the other side of the field finding Jonathan Torres with the game-tying goal just seconds into the second half. Sterling scored two more goals in succession in the next 17 minutes. Goal number two came on another well-timed play. Lawm Sangzuala received the ball in the box and passed if off it chest to Daniel Stone just outside of the box. Stone made two moves around the defense and fired the ball toward the goal, Sangzuala deflected the ball off his chest to the near corner as the keeper was diving in the opposite direction making a play on Stone’s ball before the touch by Sanzuala. Harvey Tolley tacked on another goal on a penalty kick, the second goal of the captain defender’s Sterling College career. Avila made it interesting in the 78′ cutting the lead to one at 3-2, but the Warriors left no doubt about victory by scoring one more goal in the 82′ off the foot of Matt Dale, assisted by Julio Blanco. Final score was Sterling 4, Avila 2.
Sterling improves to 3-5-1 (2-2) this season. They return to the pitch on Wednesday afternoon at McPherson and at Oklahoma Wesleyan on Saturday in Bartlesville, Okla.
