McPHERSON, Kan. (MacBulldogs.com) — The McPherson College Bulldogs got back into the win column it a dominant way Wednesday night (Oct. 16), taking down the Bethany College Swedes 5-0 at McPherson Stadium to snap a three-game losing skid.
Eric Mendoza wasted no time putting the Bulldogs on the board, taking a pass from Nathan Van Wyck and beating Marco Paniagua in the eighth minute. MC had several prime scoring opportunities over the next 20 minutes, including three shots by Van Wyck that were turned away by the Swedes’ goalkeeper.
But the Bulldogs created more separation late in the first half when Sergio Gallegos headed in a corner kick by Sergio Najera in the 43rd minute to make it a 2-0 Bulldog advantage.
Anthony Pereira netted the first of his two tallies with a header after a shot by Gallegos rang off the crossbar in the 60th minute. He scored again 17 minutes later, this time doing it all himself, firing a shot from the edge of the 18-yard box past a diving Paniagua to push the lead to 4-0.
The final goal of the night came thanks to a beautiful cross by Sijmen Van Der Zee, finding Van Wyck in the six-yard box who buried it and sealed the Bulldogs victory.
MC put 18 shots on net in the contest and held the Swedes to just one shot-on-goal. Keito Takehara, Jr. stopped the lone attempt by the Swedes. Pereira led the Bulldogs with nine shots, six of which were on target, while Van Wyck added four shots on goal and Mendoza finished with three.
The Bulldogs will be back in action Saturday (Oct. 19), as they travel to Springfield, Mo., to take on Evangel University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
