How it Happened
A significant stat that should be noted from the very beginning was McPherson’s ability to possess the ball and limit the turnovers, losing possession just four times all game long. The Moundbuilders lost possession 14 times and the Bulldogs managed to turn them into 20 points the other way.
From the floor, Southwestern College got the better of the Bulldogs in the first half after shooting 52% compared to McPherson’s 30%, knocking home 15 FGs and six three-pointers. The Moundbuilders worked their way to a 13-point lead approaching the end of the first half after a layup from Zach Hildago with the lead standing at 34-21. Korbin Gunn’s layup with 20 second left in the half lowered the margin to nine as Southwestern went into the locker room with a comfortable 38-29 lead. Gunn went into the halftime break leading the team in points at nine, with the next closest player at three points.
In the second half, Gunn continued to lead the pack on the floor as the freshman would put up 18 points and convert on more than half of his attempts (5-8). After rallying back in the opening minutes of the half, his free throws had given the Bulldogs the lead for the first time since the 17:38 mark in the first half. From then on, McPherson began to gradually grow their lead; the largest lead for the Bulldogs was worked up by a 25-9 run in the last 10 minutes of the half.
The Bulldogs would hold on in the end of the 83-74 lead as Korbin Gunn finished the day with 27 points and four rebounds, followed closely behind by Charles Snyder. Snyder nearly earned his double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds on the night.
