MCPHERSON, Kan. – A touchdown in the dying seconds of the fourth quarter lifted Wellington to a victory on Friday against McPherson.

Wellington escaped with a crucial Class 4A West District victory when quarterback Dusty Bannister hooked up with Maddox Black from 4 yards out with just two seconds left, giving the Crusaders a 23-21 win.

McPherson held Wellington to 270 yards, but the Bullpups couldn’t overcome three turnovers to just one for Wellington.

McPherson trailed 17-14 at halftime, after a Wellington interception return for a touchdown, but a Carlos German 1-yard touchdown run gave the Bullpups a 21-17 lead headed to the fourth quarter.

McPherson’s offense struggled, netting just 156 yards.

McPherson remains in sixth place in the Class 4A West District standings but would have been fifth with a win.

McPherson will travel to fellow 3-3 Mulvane on Friday before welcoming Buhler for the regular-season finale.
