McPherson High School Girls Tennis Wins League Title; Liebl & Unruh Win Doubles

BUHLER, Kan. – All six Bullpup Girls Tennis players earned All-League honors as the team won the AVCTL Div. 3 & 4 title on Wednesday, Oct. 8 in Buhler.

Quinn Liebl and Avery Unruh won the Doubles title, not losing a single set in any of their matchups. The duo was the No. 1 seed in the bracket, earning a first-round bye before sweeping past their competition. Lleyton Kuhn and Mayson Wiens finished in 3rd after falling in the semifinals in a super tiebreaker before winning a super tiebreaker in the third-place match.

Maryn Sandbo finished 2nd in the Singles tournament. The No. 2 seed only lost three games in the first round and the quarterfinal before winning two sets in the semifinal. However, she fell to the No. 1 seed in the finals 6-4, 6-1. Dragon Rodriguez finished in 6th place, going 2-2 in the bracket.

“I am extremely proud of this team,” Head Coach Tyler Brown said. “For all six players to earn All-League recognition in such a competitive field is something special. With just one practice day before Regionals on Friday at home, we’re excited to build on this momentum.”

The Bullpups will look to punch their ticket to state after finishing in 2nd place in 2024. Regionals are Friday, Oct. 10 in McPherson beginning at 9:00 a.m. Joining McPherson in the Regional tournament will be Abilene, Chapman, Colby, Concordia, Goodland, Hesston, and Scott City.

The 4A State Championships will be Oct. 17-18 at Harmon Park Tennis Complex in Prairie Village, located just outside of Overland Park.
