GODDARD, Kan. – Only one match was lost out of the four brackets for McPherson High School Girls Tennis in the Goddard Quad on Tuesday, Sept. 30, as the team won the tournament to close the regular season.
The Bullpups finished with 11 points in the quad. Wellington finished 2nd (7 points) and Goddard placed 3rd (6 points).
The No. 1 Singles tournament saw Maryn Sandbo go unbeaten to win the bracket. During the tournament, Sandbo earned her 100th career win. “[It’s] an incredible milestone, especially since every one of those wins has come at the varsity level,” Head Coach Tyler Brown said. “That’s not easy to accomplish.”
Mayson Wiens won the No. 2 Singles tournament, going 3-0. The No. 1 Doubles of Quinn Liebl / Avery Unruh fell in the championship match, placing them in 2nd. Brown mentioned that their loss was against a tough Wellington team that could earn a top-three seed in the state tournament. The No. 2 Doubles team of Dragon Rodriguez / Lleyton Kuhn went 3-0 to win the bracket.
The Bullpups will now prepare for the postseason. They will travel to Buhler on Monday, Oct. 6 for the league tournament. Regionals will then be hosted by McPherson on Friday, Oct. 10, as they look to punch their tickets back to the 4A State Championships in Prairie Ridge (located near Overland Park) on Oct. 17-18.
