High schools in McPherson County were in action Saturday, Sept. 13, at early-season invitationals. Moundridge and Canton-Galva took part in the Goessel Invitational, Inman participated in the Haven Tournament, and Elyrica Christian traveled to the Solomon Tournament.
GOESSEL INVITATIONAL
Moundridge won the Goessel Tournament, staying undefeated on the season at 14-0. The Wildcats won all five of their matches without losing a single set. They defeated Canton-Galva (25-12, 25-14), Goessel (27-25, 25-23), Langdon-Fairfield (25-12, 25-13), Sedgwick (25-22, 25-11), and South Haven (25-12, 25-8).
Canton-Galva went 2-3 in the tournament. Their three losses were to Moundridge, Goessel (13-25, 19-25), and Sedgwick (17-25, 16-25). They did end with two quality wins, defeating Hutchinson-Central Christian in two sets (25-12, 25-21) and a three-set thriller over Wichita-Southeast (19-25, 25-21, 27-25). The Eagles’ record is now 5-4 on the season.
INMAN AT HAVEN INVITATIONAL
The Inman Teutons were at the Haven Invitational Saturday, finishing 2-3 in the tournament. Their two wins were against Hutchinson-Trinity Catholic (28-8, 25-18) and Kingman (25-19, 25-15). They did lose three matches, but all of them were hard-fought against Cheney (18-25, 24-26), Garden Plain (18-25, 16-25), and Haven (20-25, 19-25). The Teutons are now 8-6 on the season.
ELYRIA CHRISTIAN AT SOLOMON INVITATIONAL
Elyria Christian finished 3rd in the Solomon Invitational, winning three out of five contests. They started with early losses to Ell-Saline in three sets (19-25, 25-22, 14-25) and unbeaten Rock Hills (7-25, 10-25). However, early wins against Flint Hills Christian School (25-17, 25-14) and Peabody-Burns (25-19, 25-21) set them up for the third-place game against Tescott. The Eagles took care of business in the match in a two-set sweep (25-11, 25-14). Elyria Christian is now 6-5 so far in the regular season.
