BUHLER, Kan. – McPherson continued its late-season rise on Friday, as the Bullpups beat their rivals from Buhler for the second time in three weeks and advanced to the Class 4A quarterfinals with a 26-3 win on Friday in Buhler.

McPherson’s defense was at the heart of Friday’s win, taking the ball away seven times. Teegan Haines had a memorable performance with five interceptions, including two for touchdowns.

The game was closer than the final score indicated, as it was tight and tense into the fourth quarter. Buhler struck first, as an interception led to a 27-yard field goal for Jeffrey Neill.

McPherson answered with a pair of field goals from Blaise Hoover, from 32 and 43 yards, before halftime, and the Bullpups led 6-3 at the break.

A sloppy third quarter followed as the teams turned it over a collective three times. Then, after Buhler forced a punt to start the fourth quarter, Haines stepped in with his first touchdown return, giving McPherson a 12-3 lead.

Carlos German added a 70-yard touchdown run for McPherson before Haines capped off the scoring with another pick-six.

Buhler finished with 236 offensive yards, to 276 for McPherson.

McPherson, the No. 7 seed, advances to play at No. 6 Andover Central in the quarterfinals. Buhler, which was the No. 2 seed, ends its season 7-3.
