STERLING, Kan. (SCWarriors.com) – Sterling College Athletic and Vice President for Athletics, Scott Downing, announced today that they will officially remove Nic Martinez’s interim tag and name him the Director of Soccer and Head Women’s Soccer Coach. Martinez stepped into the head coach role last season when the previous head coach, Justin McCain, stepped down in the offseason. With the transition, Sterling will enhance their coaching staff to help give Martinez the resources needed to revitalize the women’s soccer program.

Martinez has been a part of the soccer program since 2010, both as a player and a coach. He has been at the helm of the men’s program since 2017. He is no stranger to the women’s program where he served as an assistant coach for the team early in his career.

Martinez has gained support from administration for his successes with the men’s program, which includes an NAIA National Tournament appearance in 2020. “Overseeing our men’s and women’s soccer programs presents both a challenge and an opportunity for Coach Martinez,” said Downing. “Justin Morris, our leadership team, and I all believe that Nic and his staff are well-equipped to handle this role. Coach Martinez has demonstrated his skills as an enthusiastic recruiter and an organized leader. As a Sterling College alumnus, he understands what it takes to be a Warrior. We are excited to witness the development of both teams under his leadership.”

Martinez is excited about the chance to develop Sterling’s women’s soccer program further. “I want to thank President Rich, Justin Morris and Scott Downing for putting their trust in me to continue to improve the women’s soccer program. I am excited to continue to build on this year and look forward to a great spring season that will prepare us for next fall.”
