WICHITA, Kan. (macbulldogs.com) — Seniors Blake Maddock and Antonio Fernandez swept this week’s KCAC awards, with Maddock grabbing his second consecutive KCAC Pitcher of the Week honor and Fernandez securing the top player nod.
A native of Oakdale, Calif., Maddock came on in relief to help power the Bulldogs to an 11-5 win over Tabor College. He struck out two batters in two shutout innings while allowing just one hit.
Maddock then got the start on the hill for the Bulldogs in the first game of the series against Bethany and found his groove early, throwing seven scoreless innings while striking out ten batters.
“Blake was outstanding again for us this week,” co-interim head coach Pete Horner said. “Had multiple pitches locked in that he could command for strikes, and from that point was essentially no contest. He did a great job putting our team in a position to win game one.”
Fernandez fueled the offense this week, recording two hits in each of the four games he played this week, and had three home runs and two doubles. He also finished with 11 RBIs and scored three runs.
The Tucson, Ariz. native got it going with a pair of hits, including a two-run homer in the midweek win over. He then had a home run in the first two games of the weekend series while driving in eight runs.
Fernandez is on a seven-game hitting streak and has two hits in each of his last six appearances. Following his big week, Fernandez is now second in the KCAC with a batting average of .450, and leads the league with 46 RBIs.
“We’re excited to see Fernandez win his second player of the week award,” co-interim head coach Andrew Pratt said. ” His presence in the middle of our order, along with his leadership have been essential to our teams’s success. Excited to watch him continue to impact our team in a positive manner moving forward.”
The Bulldogs travel to Sterling to take on the Warriors tomorrow (Mar. 28). First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
