McPHERSON, Kan. – The McPherson High Baseball team made a historic run in 2022, setting a school record for wins in a season, finishing with an overall record of 23-2, winning the Class 4A state title, the first in program history.

MHS only graduated three seniors from last year’s team, but all were impact players for the Bullpups. Head Coach Heath Gerstner is set to begin his 9th season at the helm, and he expects to rely on the pitching depth and defense to give them a chance in every game this season. This is arguably one of the most experienced teams, he mentioned if they continue to progress, they should be very dangerous in May.

Hunter Alvord is one of eight seniors, he’s already signed to Cowley Community College, but a number of seniors could land on college rosters next fall. Alvord is a two-way player, who’s just as dangerous at the plate as he is on the mound, batting .459 last season with 4 home runs and 25 stolen bases. On the mound, his 1.00 ERA, was just topped by Jaret Myers, who was 8-0 with a .99 ERA. Dawson Feil completes the battery, the backstop led with 34 RBIs, batting .360, and patrolling the outfield will be Cade Wedel, he had two home runs last season, batting .339.

Teegan Haines and Owen Fetsch are both juniors that hit .300 and over in limited action as sophomores. Haines is expected to play first base, and Fetsch a utility player, but will spend some time on the mound. Ian Razak is another promising underclassman, the sophomore came on late last season, collecting a win in relief as a freshman.

Thursday, they will open their season in Buhler, taking on the Crusaders in a home-and-home series; Game 1 will be played at 6 p.m; They will face one another at Grant Complex to conclude the series on April 6. Aside from their AVCTL Div. III opponents, the Pups will take on Wichita Collegiate in a doubleheader, a quad with Emporia, Rose Hill, and Great Bend, along with a triangular Carl Albert (Okla.), and Blue Valley Southwest in a triangular.
