Lady Dragons Sink 15 3’s in Victory over Red Ravens

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (BlueDragonSports.com) – The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team hit a season-high 15 3-point goals to defeat the Coffeyville Red Ravens in a battle of the Jayhawk Conference’s last two undefeated teams on Wednesday night.

Seven different Blue Dragons hit 3-pointers, led by sophomore Landon Forbes‘ career-high four treys, to lead Hutchinson to a 66-53 victory over the Red Ravens at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons extended their program-record winning streak to 48 games, their KJCCC winning streak to 33 games and their Sports Arena winning streak to 21 games in improving to 11-0 for the season and 5-0 in the KJCCC. Coffeyville is now 8-1 overall and 3-1 in the league.

The Blue Dragons are off Saturday and will play host to Garden City next Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

Hutchinson went 15 of 32 from 3-point range, which is the fourth most 3-pointers in a single game in program history. This was the first time to have 15 or more 3-pointers in a game since sinking a program-record 18 treys against the Cowley Tigers on April 7, 2021. Hutchinson had eight 3-pointers in the first half in building a 35-13 halftime lead.

Forbes was 4 of 7 from 3-point range. Kahlen Norris and Katie Duncan had three treys each and Hailey Jackson had a pair of 3-pointers.

Norris led all scorers with 13 points on 4 of 8 shooting. Jackson and Forbes had 12 points each and Duncan had 11 points.

The Blue Dragons shot 36.5 percent (19 of 52), going 15 of 32 from 3-point range and 13 of 16 from the free-throw line. The Dragons were out-rebounded 46-32. The Dragons had 19 assists and turned the ball over 19 times.

Karliey Parker had 12 points to lead Coffeyville. Karys Washington had 11 points and Aubrey Hishaw had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Red Ravens shot 26.3 percent (15 of 52), the fourth-straight opponent the Dragons held to less than 30 percent shooting. Coffeyville was 3 of 17 from 3-point range and 20 of 28 from the free-throw line.

Hutchinson’s defense was key in a 12-2 game-opening run in which the Blue Dragons held Coffeyville without a field goal for the first 6 minutes, 35 seconds. Forbes’ first 3-pointer of the game capped the run for a 12-2 lead. Back-to-back treys from Forbes and Duncan bumped the Hutchinson lead to 18-5 with 1:09 to go. The Dragons held Coffeyville to 1 of 13 shooting for an 18-7 lead after 10 minutes.

The Dragons went on a 17-4 run over the first 8:14 of the second quarter and held the Ravens without a field goal for the first 9:42 of the period. Leading 25-11, Katcher’s 3-pointer with 5:11 to play in the quarter started a 10-run. Jada Pleasant hit a pair of free throws with 1:46 left for a 35-11 lead.

Hutchinson held Coffeyville to 2 of 27 shooting in the first half and led 35-13 at halftime.

Norris hit a 3-pointer with 5:26 remaining in the third quarter to give the Dragons a 44-22 lead. Coffeyville then went on an 8-1 run to pull within 40-25 after two Parker free throws. A Hishaw layup after a Dragon turnovers closed the gap to 46-36 with 36 second to play in the quarter. The Dragons led 50-36 after three quarters.

Coffeyville cut the Dragon lead to 50-41 after a putback with 8:40 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Dragons answered with a 9-0 run – getting 3-pointers from Duncan and Forbes in the surge – for a 61-43 lead with 2:39 left. Coffeyville got as close as 12 points down the stretch.
