MANHATTAN, Kan. (247Sports.com) – For the third time already on Monday Kansas State has a Wildcat player exiting the program as 247Sports has confirmed Treshaun Ward’s name now appears in the national database. Ward joins Jake Rubley and Shane Porter as roster members who have already gone public with their decisions to leave.

A senior running back who transferred to Manhattan this past offseason from Florida State, Ward participated in K-State’s senior ceremonies over the weekend before the regular season finale with Iowa State. He now plans to explore another season of eligibility elsewhere after splitting carries with Wildcat teammate DJ Giddens.

Originally from,  participated in 11 games this season and was credited with 124 carries for 643 net rushing yards and five touchdowns. Ward also added 17 receptions for 129 yards through the air with two more touchdowns. Tabbed the Big 12’s preseason Newcomer of the Year, the 194-pound tailback departs the Wildcat program boasting a career average of 5.97 yards per carry.

Rated by 247Sports composite scale as a three-star recruit in Florida State’s 2019 class, Ward originally chose to walk on with the Seminoles, turning down scholarship offers from 11 other Power Five programs in the process.

One could presume that splitting carries with Giddens helped lead to Ward’s decision not to return for another campaign. Two of the running back’s best games this season came during contests where he was utilized most, including a 15 carry, 118 yard showing at Texas Tech and another 89 yards on 17 carries the next week against TCU. Since the win over the Horned Frogs though, Ward’s share decreased as the tailback tallied 62% of his total carries during the first six games of the year.

The upcoming offseason features two transfer windows for players and programs to conduct transfer recruitments:

  • Winter Window: 45 days beginning on December 4, 2023
  • Spring Window: 45 days beginning on April 16, 2024

Last year alone, over 2,700 players entered their name into the transfer portal including 15 one-time Wildcats. Since 2019, K-State has seen a total of 62 transfers exit Manhattan and brought in 28 to join the roster, most notably all-conference standouts like Briley Moore, Russ Yeast and Julius Brents.

The NCAA introduced the transfer portal on Oct. 15, 2018, providing athletes a path to explore their options. Players do not need to ask permission from their coaching staff in order to transfer but merely request that compliance enter their name. A process that typically takes 24-48 hours before a player officially appears in the national database, schools are then free to contact a player without restriction.

While a player entering the transfer portal indicates an intent to explore other options, it does not necessarily mean they will. Each entry is free to withdraw his name at any time. However, schools are under no obligation to keep said player on scholarship once they enter the portal.

All players who enter the transfer portal for the first time will be immediately eligible at their new school so long as they meet a NCAA-mandated entry deadline.
