LAWRENCE, Kan. (KUAthletics.com) – The Kansas Jayhawks fell to the Gonzaga Bulldogs 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Rock Chalk Park. A goal by Gonzaga’s Erin Ewers in the 60th minute was the difference in the game.
“I’m frustrated today,” head coach Nate Lie said. “This is a tough result for the program, but I think one thing that I would give the players a lot of credit is we played Gonzaga, who is a very good team and went to the NCAA Tournament last year, [outshooting them 19-4] does show that we’re able to dictate games and control games. That’s what I said I wanted from the first moment we got here.”
Lie continued, “I think we need a greater sense of urgency. I think we need a greater sense of bravery. There’s different kinds of chances and different kinds of shots. I think we can do a better job of generating the higher, more dangerous chances. When we get those more dangerous chances, I think we can produce more dangerous, more clinical finishing.”
Similar to the previous three matches, Kansas held a large advantage on shots in the first half but was unable to score. On Sunday, KU led 11-2 in shots in the first half. The score was 0-0 at halftime.
Gonzaga (2-2-1) found the lone goal of the day in the second half. Ewers received a pass from Amelia Severn at the left elbow of the box and put it in the top right corner of the net. That gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead that they would hold the remainder of the game.
Kansas (2-1-2) held a 19-4 edge in shots, including 5-3 in shots on goal. The Jayhawks also had a 7-6 advantage on corner kicks.
