Kansas High School Soccer Coaches Association Announces All-State Honors

By Brent Maycock, KSHSAA Covered

TOPEKA, Kan. – Maize South’s Vitor Geromel and Bishop Miege’s Cooper Greene, who each led their respective teams to state titles this fall were repeat winners of player of the year awards in their classification when the Kansas High School Soccer Coaches Association announced its All-State teams on Tuesday.

Geromel, last year’s Class 5A midfielder of the year, was named the forward of the year in Class 5A this season after leading Maize South to its second straight state championship. Geromel set the state’s career goals record this season, finishing his career with 130 goals.

Greene, meanwhile, was a repeat selection as the Class 4-1A forward of the year, though this year he shared the honor with Kansas City Christian Isaiah Morris. Morris battled Geromel late in the season for the career goals record, coming up just short with 125 career goals.

The rest of the association’s player awards went to first time winners.

In Class 6A, Dodge City senior Aron Martinez was named the forward of the year, Shawnee Mission East senior Beck Rettenmaier was named the midfielder of the year and Olathe West swept the final two honors with senior Sam Delong named defender of the year and sophomore Kael Taylor named goalkeeper of the year.

First-year Olathe East head coach Keeley O’Grady was named coach of the year after guiding the Hawks to the Class 6A state title.

In addition to Geromel in Class 5A, Blue Valley Southwest seniors Maclain Dahm and Michael Bernabe were named the midfielder and defender of the year, respectively, while Bishop Carroll senior Keagan Lewis was named goalkeeper of the year. Salina South’s Trey Crow was named coach of the year after leading the Cougars to a third-place state finish, the program’s highest showing since winning the 2015 state title.

Greene’s Miege teammates swept two of the other three individual awards with senior Austen Lopez named defender of the year and junior Azael Gamboa named goalkeeper of the year. McPherosn junior Hayden Hoxie was named midfielder of the year.

The coach of the year honor in 4-1A was shared by Bishop Ward’s Antonio Subasic and KC Christian’s Nate Wright. Subasic led Ward to a runner-up state finish, the best in program history, while Wright led the Panthers to a 17-1-1 record, the lone loss coming to Miege in the quarterfinals after beating the Stags in the regular season.
