VALLEY CENTER, Kan — The Andale basketball teams were swept by Valley Center on Friday night.
Valley Center won its third straight game on the girls side, knocking off the fifth-ranked team in Class 4A, 43-39. Andale led 12-8 after the first quarter and led 18-10 in the second before the Lady Hornets used a 12-0 run to lead 22-18 at halftime. Andale used a 15-10 third quarter for 33-32 lead heading into the fourth. The Lady Indians led 37-36 in the late stages of the game, but were outscored 7-2 by the Lady Hornets. Abbi Winter led the way for Andale (1-1) with 10 points, all coming in the second half.
Valley Center won the boys game, 46-40. The two teams were knotted at 7 after eight minutes of play before Andale jumped out to an 11-7 advantage in the second quarter. The Hornets then used a 14-4 run to lead 21-18 at halftime. Valley Center led by as many as eight in the third quarter and held a 34-27 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Andale pulled within three in the final minute of the game, but Valley Center iced the game, hitting four huge free throws. Jack Horsch led Andale (1-1) with 15 points.
