Hutchinson Central Christian football team opens season against Sunrise Christian

The Hutchinson Central Christian Cougars football team open the 2025 season at Wichita against Sunrise Christian.

The Cougars lost 54-50 to Sunrise Christian at home in the 2024 season opener.

Matt Barnett is in his third year as Cougars’ coach. He is assisted by Mark Barnett and Shawn Hines.

The Cougars posted a 9-2 record in 2024 and won a pair of 48-6 decisions over Macksville and Logan/Palco in the first two rounds of the Eight-Man II state football playoffs.

Central Christian lost to Victoria 70-28 in the sectional round.

The Cougars roster features two seniors, six juniors, two sophomores and five freshmen.

Seniors are Piercen Huff (WR/DB) and Konnor Sullivan (OL/DL).

Juniors are Cal Barnett (WR/DB), Luke Eigsti (WR/DB), Cael Kooiman (TE/LB), Karson Sullivan (WR/DB), Trey Miller (OL/DL) and Brayden Wallace (OL/DL).

Sophomores are Tyler Reed (WR/DB) and Aiden Burke (OL/DL).

Freshmen are Adam Eigsti (RB/DB), Cole Meehan (RB/DB), Gabe Minnick (OL/DL), Zeke Fletchall (OL/DL) and Bruce Wilson (TE/DL).

Huff, who missed two games because of an ankle injury, caught 37 passes for 429 yards and rushed for 142 yards on 11 carries. He scored 11 touchdowns.

Luke Eigsti, who was the backup quarterback last season, caught 9 passes for 130 yards and rushed for 84 yards on 13 carries. He scored three TDs.

Cal Barnett caught 4 passes for 24 yards and one TD. Kooiman caught 3 passes for 52 yards (all three catches went for TDs).

Kooiman is the top returning defender with 118 tackles 10 tackles for loss (TFLs). Konnor Sullivan made 94 tackles, including TFLs.

Huff made 67 tackles and intercepted 7 passes. Cal Barnett had 17 stops and Karson Sullivan 10.

Kooiman, Huff and Konnor Sullivan were First Team All-District team members. Huff and Sullivan were All-State honorable mention.
