The Hutchinson High School boys swim team captured first place at the Garden City three-team competition Thursday.
Hutchinson scored 345 points, followed by Dodge City with 322 and Garden City with 314.
“The teams were pretty evenly matched, so the first-place times changed almost in every event,” said Hutchinson swim coach Bradley Johnson.
Hutchinson’s only first-place finish out of 11 events came in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Ethan Nichols came from behind on the anchor leg to out-touch Garden City’s relay by .01 seconds. Elliott Simpson led off the relay, followed by Mayer Collins and Zae Guillen. They posted a time of 1 minute, 52.79 seconds.
“All of the rest of our points came from team members that got second through 12th place points,” Johnson said. “To win a meet like this, it takes a whole team effort. Hutch has 12 swimmers and Dodge City has 17 swimmers.”
The Salthawks will host their next competition Jan. 13 at the Hutchinson YMCA.
