Hillsboro used a powerful running attack as the Trojans defeated Lyons 48-21 in Class 2A District 6 play.
Zayne Haslett opened the scoring for Hillsboro as he broke loose for a 76-yard scamper on just the third play of the game. Then Jesiah Goodh took over the remainder of the scoring for the Trojans as he rushed for five touchdowns, and caught one pass for a 43-yard TD. Hillsboro led 34-13 at halftime.
Gooch led all rushers with 200 yards on 18 carries, and he had one reception for 43 yards. Zayne Haslett had 10 carries for 102 yards. He also completed 7 of 19 passes for 165 yards and one TD. Talon Regier and Braxton Hiebert each caught two passes for the Trojans. Hillsboro had 439 yards of total offense with 269 on the ground.
Lyons quarterback David Pando had a 57-yard run with 4:25 remaining in the first half to cut the Hillsboro lead to 21-13. That is when Hillsboro took advantage of a big play on their next drive, and field position on their second drive, to close the half with two touchdowns.
Lyons rushed for 151 yards on 33 carries and was led by Pando, who had 95 yards rushing on eight carries. Pando also completed 13 of 23 passes for 112 yards.
Xander Young had two scores for Lyons.
Hillsboro moves to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in District 6 play. They will travel to Smoky Valley for a non-district game next week. Lyons falls to 0-7 on the season and 0-3 in District 6. They will return home to host Halstead play next Friday as District 6 play concludes. The winner of the Lyons vs Halstead game will earn a berth in the playoffs.
