Halstead Girls Capture Marion Tourney Title, Dragon Boys 2nd

The Halstead High School girls basketball team defeated Berean Academy 40-22 Saturday in the championship game of the 18th annual Marion Classic.

The Halstead boys placed second. The Dragons (2-2) lost to Berean Academy 73-25 in the championship game.

Halstead’s Addisen Wills, Piper Schroeder and Jordy Schroeder were named to the Girls All-Tournament Team. Wills was named the Most Inspirational Player of the tournament.

Halstead’s Reese Carmichael and Damien Whillock were named to the Boys All-Tournament Team. Carmichael and Noah Brantley were named two the All-Academic Team and Carmichael won the Boys Free Throw title.

The Halstead girls (4-0) are the No. 1-ranked team in Kansas Class 3A. Berean Academy is ranked No. 9 in Class 2A.

Halstead and Berean Academy were tied 8-8 at the end of the first quarter. Halstead led at halftime 14-10. The Halstead Dragons outscored the Warriors 13-3 in the third quarter to push their advantage to 27-13.

Wills delivered a standout performance on Monday against Wichita Central Christian Academy, recording a triple-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals in just three quarters of action.

Wills, a First Team All-State selection last season, followed it up on Tuesday against Marion with another dominant outing, finishing with 17 points and 6 rebounds. She tied a school record with 11 steals.

Through the first three games of the season, Wills averaged 15.7 points, 10 steals, 7.3 rebounds and 3 assists per game.

In the boys championship game at Marion, Berean Academy led 22-6 at the end of the first quarter, 45-12 at halftime and 63-18 after three quarters.

Under a running clock in the fourth quarter, Berean Academy outscored Halstead 12-7.
