The Halstead High School girls basketball team improved to 16-0 with a 35-33 win over Hillsboro Friday night at Hillsboro.
The Halstead boys completed the Dragon varsity sweep with a 62-38 victory.
The Halstead girls led 10-5 after one quarter, but Hillsboro went on a 14-6 run to lead at halftime 19-16. Halstead went on an 11-6 run to lead 27-25 at the end of the third quarter. Both teams scored 8 points in the fourth quarter.
The Halstead girls, ranked No. 1 in Kansas Class 3A and the defending champions, have won 41 of their last 42 games.
The Halstead boys (6-11) led Hillsboro 12-11 after one quarter, then went on a 20-4 run in the second quarter to lead 32-15 at halftime. Halstead pushed the lead to 48-27 at the end of the third quarter and outscored the Trojans 14-11 in the fourth quarter.
Damien Whillock (27) and Reece Carmichael (14) combined for 41 of Halstead’s 62 points. Whillock (7) and Carmichael (4) had 11 of the Dragons’ 12 3-pointers. Wyatt Hobbs and Mario Diaz each scored 6 points.
Braxton Hiebert scored 19 of Hillsboro’s 38 points, including three 3-pointers.
Halstead plays at Nickerson on Tuesday and Hillsboro (1-14) hosts Smoky Valley.
