Halstead boys use fourth-quarter run to beat Hoisington; Girls Finish Regular Season Undefeated

The Halstead boys basketball team outscored Hoisington 14-7 in the fourth quarter to defeat the Cardinals 45-40 Tuesday night at the Halstead High School gymnasium.

Halstead led 8-2 after one quarter and 19-17 at halftime. Hoisington took a 33-31 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Damien Whillock led the host Dragons with 12 points. Jackson Wendling and Preston Jenkins each scored 9 points, Reece Carmichael 7, Noah Brantey 4 and Mario Diaz 4.

Brantley grabbed 10 rebounds. Carlos Martinez had 9 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocked shots. Carmichael had 3 assists.

Mason Martin led Hoisington with 13 points and Kobe Crawford scored 10 points.

The Halstead boys improved to 10-12. The Cardinals are 13-10.

Halstead girls 63, Hoisington 48

With a 63-48 come-from-behind win over Hoisington Tuesday night, the Halstead Dragon girls completed an undefeated regular season at 22-0 and secured the Central Kansas League championship with 8-0 league mark.

The Halstead girls have won 28 consecutive games.

The Dragons, the defending Kansas Class 3A state champions, trailed 33-22 at halftime but outscored the Cardinals 22-10 in the third quarter and 19-5 in the fourth quarter.

Halstead senior Addisen Wills, an Ottawa University basketball signee, became the Dragons’ all-time leader in assists and steals.

Onnyka Nedich led Halstead with 21 points. Jordy Schroeder added 9 points, Bailey Bernal 7, Piper Schroeder 6, Wills 4 and Tess Williams 3.

Hoisington (11-10 overall, 3-5 CKL) was led in scoring by Kesli Maier and Marley Bittel with 9 points each.

The Halstead girls are the No. 1 seed at the Kansas Class 3A sub-state at Haven. The Dragons host No. 16 Wichita Collegiate (1-9) at 6 p.m. Friday.

No. 8 seed Haven (14-9) hosts No. 9 Minneapolis (8-12)  at 6 p.m. Friday.
