GREAT BEND, Kan. – The Jayhawk Collegiate League baseball team the Great Bend Bat Cats started off their 2025 summer season strong. After six games, they are 4-2 overall and 4-0 against Jayhawk Collegiate League opponents.
The Bat Cats started their season with two games against the Dodge City A’s, who are part of the Rocky Mountain Baseball League. Great Bend fell in both games, losing 8-3 in Great Bend Saturday, May 31 and 15-12 in Dodge City the following day.
Jayhawk Collegiate League play officially began Monday, June 2 with a 17-6 win over the Newton Rebels, thanks to a four-hit day from Henderson, Nev. native Terrance Shaw Jr. Davin Brazzle contributed with three hits and 3 RBI’s while JJ Fontana and Deacon Pomeroy had multiple hits as well. The Bat Cats followed it up with a 6-2 victory over Newton Wednesday with multi-hit performances from Brazzle, Shaw, and Luke Nohinek.
Great Bend played a seven-inning doubleheader against the Wildcats Academy from Wichita Thursday at home, winning both contests. They threw a combined no-hitter in game one with Cooper Annin, Ryland Khan, and Cade Kunz on the mound, walking off the Wildcats in the 8th inning with a bases loaded sacrifice fly by Shaw. Game two went more comfortably, ending in five innings with a 10-0 victory. Recent Great Bend High School graduate Carson Umphres threw the full game, striking out seven batters.
The Bat Cats continue the season Saturday, June 7 in Derby against the Derby Twins. They’ll return home Monday, June 9 against Derby to start a three-game home stand at Al Burns Memorial Field.
