WICHITA, KS (milb.com/wichita) – The nine runs scored in the top of the first proved to be too large of a lead for the Wind Surge to overcome in the home series opener. The Frisco Rough Riders defeated the Wichita Wind Surge 10-4 and now lead the six-game series one game to none.
The RoughRiders took a huge early lead when they put nine runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Every batter in Frisco’s line up scored in the first half inning. Trevor Hauver hit an RBI automatic double that bounced over the center field wall and David Garcia hit an RBI double as well. Josh Hatcher hit a two RBI single. Liam Hicks, Jax Biggers and Luisangel Acuna hit RBI singles. Finally, a wild pitch and throwing error by Wichita allowed Frisco to get two more runs.
David Banuelos put the Wind Surge on the board in the bottom of the third. He hit a solo home run on a line drive that rocketed over the left field wall.
Frisco got their score into double digits in the top of the fourth. Liam Hicks hit an RBI single on a fly ball to left field to bring Frisco to ten runs.
In the bottom of the fourth Wichita cut into the Frisco lead adding three runs of their own. Yunior Severino hit his 19th home run of the season on a fly ball to left center field that flew 444 feet and came crashing down off the video board. Yoyner Fajardo then hit an RBI triple and was able to reach home after Frisco committed a throwing error to third base.
Wichita had to reach into their bullpen earlier than expected. Starting pitcher Chad Donato only pitched two thirds of the first inning before being pulled. He gave up nine runs off nine hits and struck out one. He was credited with the loss. The bullpen pitched well and combined to get eleven strikeouts while only allowing one run.
Aidan Anderson started on the mound for Frisco. He pitched three full innings where he gave up one run off two hits. He struck out six batters and walked none. Tristan Polley earned the win.
The Wichita Wind Surge fall to (9-13, 37-53) and the Frisco RoughRiders improve to (12-10, 43-47).
NOTES: The three error first inning ties the Wichita season record. The four errors in the game ties the season high as well. The nine runs allowed in the first inning set a new season high record for 2023.
