CONCORDIA, Kan. (BartonSports.com) – A frigid night shooting Tuesday night at the Arley Bryant Gymnasium sent the Barton Community College women’s basketball team to a 70-44 loss at Cloud County Community College.
Combining for just eight points over the opening three minutes, the Cougars held their lone lead of 5-3, before back-to-back T-Bird three pointers put Barton in the headlights facing a 21-12 first quarter deficit.
Playing within two points of the T-Birds between the second and third quarters, the tide quickly swung in the final frame following Regina Donanu‘s opening bucket, with Cloud County building up an 8-2 run before outscoring the Cougars 24-9 over the final 10-minutes.
Suffering their third straight double-digit loss, the Cougars fall to 0-3 in league play and 4-5 overall while the T-Birds snap a 10-game losing streak in the series dating back to 2019, improving to 2-1 in conference play and 7-1 overall.
Barton will look to snap the three-game skid following the Thanksgiving holiday hosting Cowley College Saturday evening in a 5:30 p.m. tip before returning on the road next Wednesday with a trip to No. 23 Butler.
The Cougars shot 50-percent in the opening quarter while holding the T-Birds to 38.1-percent but the 5-for-12 outside shooting built up the home squads nine-point first stanza lead. Over the final 30-minutes Barton would cool into the teens going just 8-of-50 for a brisk 16-percent with Cloud County shaking off a 31.3-percent third quarter to bury 9-of-16 in the final frame for a final 38.8-percentage, as the Cougars hit a season lowest 19.6-percentage from the field.
Committing 15 first half turnovers, Barton faced a 10-point differential off turnovers at the midway point, before cleaning things up committing eight second half miscues to finish with a final discrepancy of minus-13 points off turnovers.
Vivian Onugha was the lone Cougar reaching double-figure scoring posting her sixth double-double of the season with 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the field and hauling down a game high 20 rebounds helping Barton to a plus-13 edge on the glass in 28 minutes of action after battling foul trouble and fouling out with 7:17 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Brittany Simpson was held to just eight points sinking 4-of-6 from the charity stripe while Eva Clements led Barton to a plus-nine advantage in bench production adding seven points with Keyona Hall and Charolette Delisle each contributed four apiece.
Getting to the line scoring half of their points at the free throw line, the Cougars finished 22-of-30 for 73.3-percent, led by Alaina Eck sinking all six of her attempts to finish with six points.
Hitting 9-of-21 from long distance, Cloud County’s Bre Frazier drained 4-of-6 from outside for a game high 30 points. TiAna Davis was the other lone T-Bird in double-digit scoring hitting a trio of treys for 11 points and tying Lilliana Petersen with seven rebounds each to lead Cloud County on the glass.
