Friday area high school football roundup: Salthawks post fourth shutout

Hutchinson 50, Campus 0 – The Salthawks earned their fourth shutout of the season, and held their fourth opponent to fewer than 100 yards of total offense, as Campus managed just 13 yards on 33 plays.

Hutchinson countered with a strong, balanced offense. Max Harris led the Salthawks on the ground with 64 rushing yards and one touchdown. Jeremiah Gaitho Karanu added 45 rushing yards and two scores.

Levi Kepler connected on his only two pass attempts for 78 yards and two touchdowns, to Taishaun Williams and Mitchell Rice.

Hutchinson improved to 4-2 and will host Newton next week.

Moundridge 12, Marion 8 – Bear Moddelmog caught a screen pass from Henry Hecox and turned it into a 31-yard touchdown with 2 minutes, 15 seconds left in the fourth quarter, and Moundridge remained undefeated by winning a defensive slugfest over Marion.

Neither team had 200 yards of offense, but there was also just one combined turnover.

Marion took the lead early in the second quarter on Kadon Mercer’s 44-yard touchdown pass from Carson Krause, but Moundridge answered right before halftime on Fynn Burge’s 13-yard touchdown catch from Hecox.

Moudridge will take on fellow undefeated Sedgwick next week while Marion wraps up district play vs. Remington, needing a win to clinch a playoff spot.

Nickerson 26, Lyons 21 – In a game that had four lead changes and two ties, Nickerson emerged with a victory for the first time this season, as Kris Monroe threw the winning touchdown on fourth down from the 8-yard line to Keastin Abernathy.

Monroe accounted for three of Nickerson’s four touchdowns as he also rushed for two touchdowns, from 3 and 9 yards.

Rylan Morrell led Nickerson with 116 rushing yards on 17 carries.

Quanick Hamilton had two touchdown catches for Lyons from 37 and 35 yards.

Central Plains 46, Canton-Galva 0 – The Central Plains Oilers locked in a spot in the 8-Man Division 1 playoffs with a shutout win over Canton-Galva in Claflin.

In a game called at half, Brodie Crites connected with Paxton Dody on a 49-yard touchdown pass on the second play from scrimmage for the Oilers. Crites threw two more touchdown passes of 26 yards to Eli Hurley and 35 yards to Aiden Hekele. Hurley, Richard Stroud and Joel Schreiber added touchdown runs for Central Plains.  Crites finished 15-20 for 235 yards passing to lead Central Plains as they improved to 5-1 and 3-0 in 8-Man DI District 3.  Canton-Galva is 2-4 and 0-3 in district play.

Conway Springs 41 Sterling 14 – Ater leading 14-12 at the half, the Sterling Black Bears fell to the Conway Springs Cardinals in district play. Conway Springs came out strong with a 95-yard drive, capped by a six-yard touchdown run by Isaac Winter. Sterling would quickly respond with a three play 76 yard drive helped by a 57-yard burst by Zain Farney. Wyatt Newberry capped the drive with a 12-yard run to give Sterling a 7-6 lead after the first quarter.

Conway Springs answered early in the second with another Winter touchdown, this time from one yard out, taking  a 12-7 lead. But Sterling rose to the occasion, as Logan Isaac connected on a one-yard touchdown pass to put the Black Bears up 14-12 going into the break.

The second half, though, belonged to Conway Springs.

Farney paced Sterling with 166 yards on 26 carries.  Winter led Conway Spring with 197 yards on 20 carries.

With the loss, Sterling falls to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in district play, while Conway Springs remains undefeated at 6-0. Sterling will look to bounce back next week as district play continues. Sterling hosts the South Sumner Outlaws next Friday.
