STERLING, Kan. (SCWarriors.com) – Warrior football opened the season at home against the Bethel College Threshers. Sterling struggled to get the ball moving on offense and amassed just 83 yards of total offense on the night. Sterling lost 13-0 on the opening night of the season.
The highlight of the night for Sterling’s offense was an acrobatic catch by Cameron Williams that gained the Warriors 37 yards on the catch. The quarterback battle continues as Rocklin Baptista and Jordan Slocum split time; the majority going to Baptista on night 1.
The Sterling defense was tested and fared well giving up just two touchdowns on a night that they gave up 345 yards of offense. Hunter Pullen set himself apart from the rest of the defense with 16 tackles. Flin Cameron and Blake Montgomery added 11 each and Dexter Walker Jr. added 10. The defensive highlight came deep in Warrior territory when Jakobi Spence took advantage of an under thrown pass at the goal line and came away with an interception that he returned 22 yards. Mason Cobb helped turn the field in special teams with averaging nearly 43 yards per punt, with his longest a 55 yard rugby kick that was out of the reach of the Thresher returners.
Sterling heads to McPherson College next weekend to take on the Bulldogs. The game will take place at 6 pm.
