COFFEYVILLE, Kan. (BlueDragonSports.com) – The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team earned their fourth win of the season over a nationally ranked opponent and improved to 7-0 for the ninth time in program history on Saturday.
The Blue Dragons took advantage of five Coffeyville turnovers, scoring 21 points off those takeaways and defeated the No. 12-ranked Red Ravens 40-17 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Dragons are 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the KJCCC, remaining one of two unbeaten KJCCC teams in league play. No. 5 Garden City defeated No. 14 Butler on Saturday. The Blue Dragons play host to Butler at Noon Saturday at Gowans Stadium.
Hutchinson extended their KJCCC winning streak to 21 games and its win streak in true road games to 18 games.
For the second time this season, the Blue Dragons forced at least five takeaways and now have 15 takeaways in seven games.
Coffeyville’s first turnover, a bad shotgun snap returned 30 yards to the Raven 1 one Demarcus Robinson, led to Hutchinson’s first score of the game. Samari Collier scored on the next play for a 7-0 lead. With 9:12 to play in the opening quarter. Just 33 seconds later, another bad Raven shotgun snap was recovered in the Coffeyville end zone for a Dragon safety and a 9-0 lead.
Defensive back Kollin Collier had two of Hutchinson’s three interceptions. Rayshawn Reynolds had the other interception. Marshon Oxley had the other fumble recovery as Hutchinson outscored Coffeyville 21-3 in points off turnovers. The Dragons didn’t have a quarterback sack, but had seven quarterback pressured.
The Blue Dragons out-gained Coffeyville 426-379 on Saturday. Hutchinson had 284 passing yards and 142 rushing. The Red Ravens had 204 passing and 175 rushing yards. The Blue Dragons were 5 of 5 on red-zone opportunities.
Back-up quarterback Christian Johnson threw for a season-high 228 yards on 13 of 20 passing with a touchdown. Samari Collier was 2 of 4 for 56 yards.
A season-high seven different Blue Dragons caught passes, led by Derrick Salley Jr.‘s five receptions for 53 yards. Ja’Cory Thomas had four catches for 64 yards.
Running back Waymond Jordan Jr. had his fifth 100-yard rushing game of the season, rushing for a team-high 121 yards on 22 carries and three touchdowns on runs of 83, 10 and 6 yards.
Coffeyville running back Ma’Kenttis Adams had 157 yards on 27 carries, the most rushing yards by a Blue Dragon opponent this season.
After the Dragons jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter, the defense got a defensive stop and Jordan broke loose for his 83-yard touchdown run for a 16-0 lead with 3:10 to play in the opening quarter. Coffeyville mounted a four-play, 75-yard scoring drive, getting a 45-yard touchdown reception from Jalile Bost with 45 seconds remaining to cut the Dragon lead to 16-7 after one quarter.
The teams traded field goals in the second quarter. Nestus Burger‘s 33-yard field goal gave the Dragons a 19-7 lead with 12:45 remaining in the period. Coffeyville’s Roan McCarthy booted a 36-yard field goal on the final play of the second quarter to trim the Dragon lead to 19-10 at halftime.
The Blue Dragons took the second-half kickoff and marched 75 yards in 10 plays to score on Thomas’ 20-yard touchdown pass from Johnson for a 26-10 lead with 10:56 to play. The Dragons made it 33-10 on Jordan’s 10-yard touchdown run that was set up by Reynolds’ 40-yard interception return to the Coffeyville 16. Coffeyville answered with a Brec Long 4-yard touchdown run with 1:57 left in the third quarter, cutting the Dragon lead to 33-17.
The Dragons closed out the scoring with an eight-play, 80-yard scoring drive set up by Kollin Collier‘s interception in the end zone for a touchback. Jordan scored from 6 yards out with 8:39 remaining to give Hutchinson a 40-17 lead.
