KANSAS CITY, Mo. (MacBulldogs.com) – The McPherson College Bulldogs extended their winning streak to four games Saturday (Sep. 28) with a 42-24 victory over the Avila University Eagles at the Zarda Sports Complex in Kansas City, Mo.
The Bulldogs (4-1) wasted no time putting points on the board, when Jalil Brown caught a pass from Tristan Szabo on the third play of the game, and took it 60 yards for the score.
Avila got a field goal on the next possession then Szabo found Harley Blaskefor a five-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 14-3 with 3:25 left in the first quarter.
Szabo’s day went from good to great in the second quarter, rushing for a 21-yard score, his first of the season.
The Bulldogs gained 451 yards of total offense, including a season-high 285 yards through the air. Szabo was efficient, going 13-for-18 for 273 yards and four touchdowns. Traven Lewis-Johnson caught four passes for 129 yards and a touchdown.
MC scored on its first two drives out of halftime, the first coming on a two-yard touchdown run by Brown, then Blaske caught his second touchdown pass of the day to put the Bulldogs on top 28-3.
14 straight points by the Eagles following touchdown runs by Eli Williams and Quentin Curtis, but the Bulldogs responded with a 77-yard touchdown pass from Szabo to Lewis-Johnson.
The Bulldogs were outstanding on third down, going 6-for-10, and even converted one of their two fourth down opportunities.
Brown carried the ball 12 times for 80 yards, while Brysen Kerby had 46 yards on 11 carries.
On the other side, Williams threw the ball 43 times, completing 27 passes for 304 yards. MC held the Eagles to just 25 yards rushing.
The Bulldogs return to McPherson Stadium next Saturday for their last game on non-divisional play against Kansas Wesleyan University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
