Five-Run 9th Inning the Difference Maker in Monarchs Win over Rebels

NEWTON, Kan. – The Hutchinson Monarchs defeated the Newton Rebels 13-8 Wednesday thanks to a five-run ninth inning to give them their 13th win of the season.

The Monarchs had a great start, holding a 6-0 lead after three innings. They got on the board with a two-run single by Blake Bradford in the opening frame. They then tacked on four in the 3rd on a pair of errors, then a two-run home run by Keegan Demmer.

Pryce Bender threw three shutout innings to start, but gave up a three-run 4th and three more in the 5th, which tied the game. Two more runs with Whit Rhodes on the bump gave Newton the lead. The Monarchs added a run in the 6th to tie the game on a Bradford RBI groundout.

The game remain tied through the 8th, but the Monarchs struck in the 9th to take the lead for good thanks to an error, two walks, an RBI single by Bradford, and a sacrifice fly by Demmer. Aiden Sowers closed it out in the 9th inning where he, despite walking two batters, struck out two to help give the Monarchs the win.

Hutchinson is now 13-3 on the season, currently holding a two-game lead in the Jayhawk Collegiate League standings. The Monarchs and the Rebels will rematch Thurs., June 26 at 7 p.m. in Newton.
