Elyria Christian Basketball Teams Suffer Losses to Berean Academy

McPHERSON, Kan. – After collecting two wins road against Central Christian on Monday, it was a challenging night for both Elyria Christian Basketball Teams on Tuesday, as they played host to the Berean Academy Warriors.

“We came out strong, finishing the first quarter tied with the Berean Warriors.” noted Assistant Coach Sarah Swenson, “However in the second quarter,  Berean’s significant height advantage helped them to quickly take over the game.”

The Lady Eagles were held to just two points in the quarter, as Berean was tough defensively and were able to extend their lead to 27-9 at the half.

“It was a hard fought effort that our girls put forth, and I felt like after coming off a challenging game last night, that it was difficult for us to have the energy we needed in the second half.” said Swenson.

Allie Stone led ECS with 8 points, while Ryland Hawkinson followed with 6 points, but the Lady Eagles would fall 46-18. They move to 15-4 overall, and will travel to Marion on Friday, before beginning sub-state in Goessel next week.

A late rally by the Elyria Christian Boys came up just short on Tuesday, as they fell 40-36 to Berean. Eagles Head Coach Zach Goodrich noted, “I knew we would be in for a challenge playing our third game in five days.”

“It was a tough one all around,” said Goodrich, who noted some missed opportunities on offense, as well as uncharacteristic mistakes on defense. Berean had 11 offensive rebounds that helped them keep separation, and Goodrich said, “We just ran out of gas by the time we decided to make one more push.”

Coach Goodrich concluded by saying, “We can take a valuable lesson from this contest, and use it moving forward. I know we will learn from it, and get to practicing what we did not do well this evening.”

The loss snapped a 13-game winning-streak by the Eagles, who moved to 16-3. They will look to add one more win to their regular season total on Friday, when they travel to Marion.
