INDEPENDENCE, Kan. ( – The Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team extended their win streak to five and improved its road record this season to 4-4 with a convincing victory over the Independence Pirates on Wednesday.

Sophomore Mya Williams put together her second-straight 28-point performance as Hutchinson bolted out to a 29-point halftime lead and finished off a season sweep of the Pirates with an 82-58 victory over Independence at the ICC Fieldhouse.

The Blue Dragons improved to 15-4 overall and 9-4 in the Jayhawk Conference. Hutchinson snapped a two-game losing streak at the ICC Fieldhouse and won its third-straight over the Pirates. The Dragons will play host to Cloud County at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Pirates dropped to 9-10 overall and 7-6 in league play.

Williams scored 22 of her season-high-tying 28 points in the first half. The first eight points came in a 20-7 run that helped the Dragons built a 22-9 lead after the first quarter. Williams scored 14 points in a 24-8 second quarter that powered the Blue Dragons to a 46-17 lead at halftime

Williams tied a career high with 12 field goals on 19 shot attempts. She hit 2 of 4 from 3-point range. Williams moved past Kim Gwinner (1986-88) into eighth place on the Blue Dragon career scoring list with 984 points.

Freshman Monae Duffy posted her third-straight double-double with 14 points on 7 of 11 shooting and 11 rebounds. Freshman Journey Armstead had 14 points, going 8 of 9 from the foul line. Morgan Browning collected 12 points.

The Blue Dragons shot 48.4 percent from the field (32 of 69), hitting only 3 of 9 from 3-point range and 15 of 17 from the foul line. The Dragons were outrebounded 42-39, but limited themselves to 10 turnovers. Coffeyville had 22 turnovers and the Dragons had a 27-7 advantage in points off turnovers.

Valentina Ojeda had a double-double to lead Independence with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Ojeda was 10 of 10 from the free-throw line. Sabrina Larsson had 10 points.

The Blue Dragons held the Pirates to 31.0 percent shooting (18 of 58), going 5 of 25 from 3-point range and 17 of 25 from the free-throw line.

Hutchinson couldn’t have scripted a better start. The Dragons held the Pirates to just one field goal and only four total points over the first 5:46 of the opening quarter as the Dragons pushed their lead to double figures for the first time after a Williams jumper with 4:40 left gave Hutchinson a 14-4 lead. The Pirates were held to just one field goal in the final 4:20 of the quarter as Hutchinson closed the first period on an 8-2 run. The Dragons led 22-9 after an Armstead jumper with 22 seconds to play in the period.

Hutchinson opened the second quarter with a 15-3 run to complete a 23-5 surge and built a 37-12 lead after a Williams layup with 5:08 to play. The Blue Dragons limited Independence to 5 of 20 shooting in the first half to build a 46-17 lead at halftime.

The closest the Pirates got in the second half was 22 points when Indy scored the first seven points of the third quarter to pull within 46-24 with 8:34 remaining in the quarter. The Dragons immediately answered with a 10-3 run and led 56-27 after two Armstead free throws with 5:16 left in the third quarter.

The Dragons’ largest lead was 32 points after Williams scored with 6:05 to play in the third quarter for an 80-48 lead.
