PITTSBURG – Day one of the Region 6 Indoor Track & Field Championships did not disappoint for the Hutchinson Community College indoor track and field teams.
Five Blue Dragons claimed individual region titles Saturday at the Plaster Center at Pittsburg State University, and both the Blue Dragon men’s and women’s teams are in the lead heading into day two of the meet.
The Blue Dragon men led with 53 points, and the Blue Dragon women hold a half-point lead with 47.5 points.
In the women’s shot put, Xylavene Beale – once named an NJCAA Field Athlete of the Week – won the event with a mark of 15.62 meters (51 feet-3 inches). Teammate Deisheline Mayer-Scott came in third as the Blue Dragons scored 16 points in the event. Mayer-Scott had a mark of 13.77 meters (45 feet-2 inches).
Yassine Sassi won the men’s long jump with a mark of 7.50 meters (24 feet-7 ¼ inches).
Mildred Rono, who set the new NJCAA record in the women’s 3,000 meters, set a new Region 6 record and won the women’s 5,000 with a time of 16:41.60. Kimberlin Lovell scored points and finished fifth with a time of 19:15.21.
Joshua Sweetnam claimed the region title in the men’s shot put and won the event by over four feet. Sweetnam had a mark of 17.66 meters (57 feet-11 ¼ inches).
The Blue Dragon women’s 4,000-meter relay team set a Region 6 record and won the region title in the event with a time of 11:58.18. That group consists of Ashara Frater, Sabrina McDonald, Kimberlin Lovell, and Mildred Rono.
In the men’s 4,000 relay, the Blue Dragon men (Dennis Cheruiyot, Kyler Medlin, Max Ryan, Esteban Oses) finished in fourth with a time of 10:08.20.
In the men’s vault, Gregory Martinez and Wesley Gill placed in the top five – Martinez as the region runner-up at 4.33 meters and Gill in fourth clearing 4.03 meters. Grace Bender finished fourth in the women’s pole vault, clearing 3.20 meters.
