Defending 2A State Champs Moundridge Girls Returning to State

In the Kansas Class 2A girls sub-state Berean Academy sub-state No. 2 finals Friday night at Elbing, the Moundridge girls, the defending 2A state champions, edged Hillsboro 33-31.

Cammi Unruh scored 20 of Moundridge’s 33 points. Ella Potucek scored 18 of Hillsboro’s 31 points.

Moundridge advances to the 2A state quarterfinals with a 23-2 record. Hillsboro finished the season with a 18-5 record.

Moundridge led 11-4 after one quarter and 17-15 at halftime. Both teams scored 8 points in the third quarter and 8 points in the fourth period.

The Moundridge girls defeated Inman and Solomon in sub-state play.

The 2A girls tournament Elite Eight consists of Moundridge, Salina Sacred Heart (21-4), Ellinwood (23-2), Pittsburg St. Mary’s Colgan (23-2), Eureka (22-2), Oakley (22-4), Valley Heights (19-7) and Rossville (14-10).

Quarterfinal matchups will take place on Tuesday at sites to be announced. Ellinwood is the No. 1 seed and will No. 8 seed Rossville, Eureka plays Oakley, Moundridge plays Valley Heights and Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan plays Salina Sacred Heart.

The winners advance to the Final Four semifinals on Thursday at Emporia’s White Auditorium.

The semifinal losers play for third place on Friday at Emporia’s White Auditorium and the winners play for the state title on Saturday.
