Trinity Catholic senior quarterback Drew Dechant rushed four times and passed four times, for a total of eight touches on Friday. But he made those touches count, as he threw for 145 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 152 yards and two touchdowns, leading Trinity to a 48-7 win over South Sumner County at Prichard Field.
The win improved Trinity to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in Class 1A District 7 play.
Dechant got the Celtics off to a good start. After the Celtics stuffed the Outlaws at midfield on the game’s first possession, the Celtics scored two plays later on Dechant’s 37-yard touchdown run.
Then after an interception, the Celtics scored again on Dechant’s 85-yard touchdown run.
After the Outlaws closed to 14-7 early in the second quarter, the Celtics scored four touchdowns before halftime. Decant hit Bentyn Chastain on a 41-yard touchdown pass, Luke Kerns had a 28-yard touchdown run, Dechant fired a gorgeous bomb down the sideline to Kaid McElgunn that resulted in a 79-yard touchdown, and McElgunn scored again with 8 seconds left on a 16-yard pass from Dechant.
Adahir Guerrero scored the final touchdown in the third quarter on a 13-yard run.
The Celtics finished with 447 yards of offense while holding South Sumner County to 207 yards.
Trinity will play next week against the reigning two-time 1A champion Conway Springs
