Crusaders Fall to Great Bend in Showdown at Buhler

About the only thing the Great Bend Panthers couldn’t do right Friday night was make extra points — GBHS missed on three extra points (two blocks).

The Panthers improved to 3-0 with a 38-14 victory over Buhler Friday night at Crusader Stadium in Buhler.

The Buhler Crusaders fell to 2-1.

The Panthers led 14-0 after one quarter and 20-0 at halftime. Great Bend scored two TDs in the third quarter to make the score 32-0.

Buhler finally got on the board in the third period when Asher Zachary connected with Landon Martinez with a 76-yard TD pass. The PAT kick was good.

The Crusaders cut Great Bend’s lead to 32-7 and that was the score at the end of the third quarter.

After Great Bend scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to make the score 38-7, Martinez returned the kickoff 89 yards to cut the Panther lead to 38-14.

Zachary completed 7-of-15 passes for 116 yards for Buhler, which was held to 219 yards of total offense by the Panthers.

Ben Clouse rushed for 61 yards on 18 carries. Asher McCounnaughy added 22 yards rushing and Max Harmony 15. Martinez had the TD reception for 76 yards and Dylan Scripsick had 1 catch for 22 yards.

In addition to the two TDs, Martinez intercepted a pass.

Great Bend quarterback Daxton Minton completed 21-of-30 passes for 253 yards, two TD passes and pick by Martinez. He also ran for 8-yard TD and caught a 10-yard TD pass from Cooper Ohnmacht.

Connor Holladay rushed for 68 yards on 13 carries and scored two TDs. Ohnmacht caught 13 passes for 168 yards with two TD catches.

Ian Premer, who will play football at Notre Dame next season, caught 4 passes for 67 yards, including a 42-yard TD pass. Hayden Kelly caught 3 passes for 20 yards.

Great Bend had 356 yards of total offense (263 passing and 93 rushing) and limited the Crusaders to 217 yards (116 passing and 101 rushing).

Kale Kern led the Panthers’ defense with 13 tackles and Trenton Kern made 10 stops. The Panthers recorded 3 sacks.

Buhler plays at Towanda-Circle next Friday. Great Bend plays at Wichita North next Friday.
