The Cheney Cardinals won a 56-54 overtime thriller over Andale Friday night to capture the championship game of the 58th annual Halstead Adolph Rupp Boys Basketball Tournament.
The tournament was played at the Halstead High School gymnasium.
Cheney’s Quaid Thomas was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player and was joined on the All Tournament Team by Ayden Koehn. Cheney’s Cooper Frieden was named to the tournament’s All Academic Team. Reece Tolar was the tournament’s free throw champion.
Haven defeated Garden Plain 56-39 in the third-place game.
Brogan Wray led the Haven Wildcats with 18 points. Cole Brawner scored 14 points, Logan Jacques added 12 and Wyatt Bontrager chipped in with 7. Wray was named to the All-Tournament Team,
The Lawrence Lions won the fifth-place game over the Winfield Vikings 58-47.
The host Halstead Dragons lost a 65-62 decision to the Rose Hill Rockets in the seventh-place game.
Damien Whillock scored 21 points for the Dragons. Carlos Martinez scored 13 points and dished off 7 assists.. Reece Carmichael scored points.
Zander Ford scored 27 points for Rose Hill and Aidan Haugh added 19 points. Ford was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Also named to the All-Tournament Team were Andale’s Caden Fowler and Jake Horsch. Winfield’s Evan Hutto and Ayden Koehn, Garden Plain’s Cooper Eck and Lawrence’s Edward Roman Nose.
