HAVEN, Kan. — A 33-18 second half proved to be the difference in the second semifinal between Andale and Cheney in the 53rd annual Wildcat Classic.
Cheney flipped the scoreboard after trailing 21-17 and used a 22-9 third quarter and never looked back in a 50-39 victory over the Lady Indians, ending their six-game winning streak.
Andale got off to a strong start, leading 11-4 after the first quarter and leading by as many as 10 before Cheney made it 21-17 at halftime. Once Cheney took the lead in the third quarter, the closest Andale got was one point on two different occasions. Cheney led 39-30 heading into the fourth and led by as many as 12.
Cheney (12-3) got 15 points off the bench by Katy Wehrman, while Raegan Black added 14. Andale (8-4) got a game-high 19 points from Brooke Grimes.
Andale will take on Garden Plain in the third place game of the Wildcat Classic at 2 p.m. Saturday. Garden Plain and Andale will meet for a second time after the Lady Owls defeated Andale, 46-39, on Jan. 2. Cheney will face Halstead at 3:30 p.m. for the tournament championship. Halstead defeated Garden Plain, 48-33. On the consolation side of the bracket, Haven defeated Valley Center, 55-28, and will play for fifth place against Maize at 12:30 p.m. Maize defeated Circle, 53-47. Circle and Valley Center will play for seventh place at 11 a.m.
