Caver III Cashes in With 5 TDs; Swedes Overcome 20-point Deficit for the Win

Leavenworth, Kan. – The Bethany College Swedes showcased what overcoming adversity truly means. Finding themselves down 41-21 in the third quarter, the Swedes fought back and prevailed as part of a 28-0 run to close out the Spires and take home the first victory of the season in style.

In his first start as a Swede, Jessie Caver III threw for 283 yards and five touchdowns. All four touchdowns in the second half were touchdown passes to four different pass catchers. Jadavion Fleming had his best game of the season as well with 13 carries for 82 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Fleming also led all pass-catchers with 65 yards while adding two more touchdowns.

As for defense, Cooper Bogenhagen made the switch to defense this fall and it is paying off. Bogenhagen led the Swedes with six tackles and also recovering a blocked punt for a touchdown for Bethany’s opening score. D’Avin Griffin nabbed the first interception of the season for Bethany to go along with 4 tackles.

It was a tale of two halves for the Bethany offense. The Swedes tallied 161 yards of offense in the first half with 60 of those yards coming off their one scoring drive. The second half showcased 284 yards of offense for Bethany including four scoring drives. The defense was dominant in the second half holding the Spires to -14 yards of total offense.

The Swedes will look to keep the momentum rolling as they will host the Sterling College Warriors on Saturday, September 20. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM as it will be the first afternoon contest for the Swedes this year.
