Bullpups sweep Circle, giving them sole possession of 1st place in AVCTL DIII standings

TOWANDA, Kan. – The McPherson Bullpups basketball teams returned to divisional play after their mid-season tournament, sweeping the Circle Thunderbirds, which gives them sole possession of the top spot in AVCTL DIII standings.

GIRLS: McPherson – 40, Circle – 25

It was not the prettiest game by any stretch of the imagination as both teams struggled to shoot the ball, especially from the perimeter, but the Bullpups defense stymied the 7th ranked Thunderbirds, allowing the second-lowest points defensively this season. Circle high school star Kya Thornton, who has committed to play basketball at Tabor College, was held scoreless and did not play in the second half due to injury.

McPherson’s Karter Alvord led the Bullpups with 9 points. Jayla McLeod and Jaela Thompson each added 7.

The Bullpup girls move to 10-3 (5-0 AVCTL DIII) on the season.

BOYS: McPherson – 62, Circle – 46

In a battle of two unbeaten teams in 4A, the Bullpups found themselves down early. However a spark late in the first quarter gave McPherson the edge for the rest of the game, thanks to clutch shooting and stellar perimeter defense. Circle, who shot 10-16 in their game against Rose Hill on Jan. 26, only hit four shots from deep on Monday.

Cory Muehler led McPherson with 15 points. Gabe Pyle added 13, and Owen Pyle had 10.

The Bullpup boys are now 13-0 (5-0 AVCTL DIII) this season.

Both teams will be back at home Friday, Feb. 2 against Wichita-Collegiate. The varsity girls will play at 6 p.m., the boys at 7:30 p.m. Both games can be heard on 98.9/1540 KMCP.
