Girls Tennis Invitational at Hesston
McPherson High School Girl’s Tennis started the athletic year for the Bullpups on a high note, winning the Hesston Invitational and finishing all individual events in the top three. “I felt our girls started the season very well and should be very proud of themselves,” head coach Tyler Brown said.
The No. 2 Singles and Doubles saw the Bullpups in the top spot. Dragon Rodriguez got the top spot in singles and Avery Eveland/Erin Olson won the doubles, each with 3-0 records. The No. 1 Singles and Doubles saw the Bullpups in 3rd, with Maryn Sandbo in the singles and Avery Unruh/Quinn Liebl each going 2-1.
The Bullpups had their home opener scheduled for Thursday, Sep. 5, but inclement weather postponed the event.

Girls Golf 4A State Preview at Hesston
The McPherson Girls Golf team started off the 2024 season well, finishing 5th out of 21 teams at the 4A State Preview tournament in Hesston. The team finished with a total score of 373, finishing just 30 strokes behind of tournament winner Wamego.
The team was led by Andi Buschbom finished in 3rd place with a score of 77 (+6). Brodie Kuhn also finished in the top 10 in 9th place with 83 (+12). Other finishers include Reese Elliot in 27th, Hattie Gibson in 64th, Ameilia Moody and Addison French tying for 78th, and Pera Bauer in 80th.
“I am very proud of our team,” Head Coach Treg Fawl said. “We had a lot of new faces playing 18 holes for the first time in a tournament setting. We are looking forward to the growth of our team throughout the season.”
The team’s next meet will be in Salina Tuesday, Sep. 10. They’ll follow up with an invitational two days later at Winfield.

Volleyball AVCTL Preseason Tournament
McPherson High School Volleyball started the 2024 season going 2-3 in the AVCTL Preseason tournament held at MHS. The team had a strong 9 a.m. start with a two-set win over Derby, but fell in two straight matches to Andale and Maize. Following a lunch break, the Bullpups came back with a win over Newton and ended the day falling to Andover in three sets.
Three Bullpups did finish with over 30 kills in all matches, with Brooke Doile leading with 36. Haely Hagemann finished with 6 aces and Ava Romero had 7 blocks.
The team also had a triangular Tuesday, Sep. 3, which can be seen below.

Tuesday, September 3
Volleyball Triangular at Andale
vs. Andale: L 2-1 (25-21, 16-25, 21-25)
vs. Mulvane: L 2-0 (19-25, 17-25)
The Bullpups struggled in their first triangular of the season, falling in both matches. Set one of the Andale match saw McPherson get a set win, however they were down 7-0 in set two and were unable to get back over the hump. Set three went back and forth, but Andale got on a late run to win the match.
In the Mulvane match, McPherson was not able to get any momentum following multiple Mulvane swings, falling in both sets. “We will get back in the gym, look at our stats, look at areas to improve, and keep working,” Head Coach Christy Doile said. “I feel like we are playing hard, hustling and we just need to put it all together. We need to find consistency and I’m confident this group will find it.”
McPherson is now 2-5 to start the season. They will head to Buhler Tuesday, Sep. 10 for a triangular against Buhler and Mulvane.

Cross Country at Great Bend
The girls and boys Cross Country teams each finished in 7th at the Great Bend Invitational at Lake Barton, with two Bullpups medaling in their races.
The girls team was led by Lexi Patterson, who finished in 11th with a time of 20:28. The boys team was led by Caleb Muehler, who finished in 3rd with a run of 16:12.

Boys Soccer at Circle
McPherson – 7, Circle – 0
The Bullpup Boys Soccer team started the 2024 season 1-0 following a shutout victory over Circle 7-0.
McPherson led 3-0 at halftime before scoring four more goals in the 2nd half for the blowout victory. The team finished with 16 shots on goal and GK Gabe Standfast has two saves.
Manny Morales and Borin Heang each had two goals and one assist. Ben Bocox, Yahir Valadez, and Alex Brubaker added goals as well.
The team will be on the road for a tournament at Maize South on Sep. 10, 12, and 14.
