Bullpup Sports Roundup: Girls Soccer Beats Buhler & Wich.-Classical; Golf, Swim, & Track Place 2nd to Close Regular Season

GIRLS SOCCER

McPherson High School Girls Soccer continues to aim towards the top of the 4-1A West Regional standings with two big home games, starting off with a home rivalry vs. Buhler Tuesday, May 6. An early first half goal by senior Ellie Bower became the lone difference maker against the Crusaders as it ended up being the only goal in the 1-0 Bullpup win. The JV teams tied 0-0.

Following the win, McPherson played at home two days later against Wichita-Classical, which saw a dominant victory for the Bullpups 8-0. Becca Lulloff had a hat trick scoring the first, third, and seventh goals. Grace Prescott had two goals in the first half and three assists in the second half. Ellie Bower, Alivia Villalobos, and Addison Shaft each scored a goal in the second half. Villalobos also had four assists. The JV teams tied in this game as well at 2-2.

The Bullpups are now 11-4 with one game remaining in the regular season, which will be Monday, May 12 vs. Wichita-Trinity Academy. The Bullpups currently sit in 3rd place in the 4-1A West Regional standings, behind Trinity (10-1-2) and Rose Hill (10-3).

McPherson will look to keep their top three position when the regular season ends as the #1, #2, and #3 seeds earn a bye in the Regional Semifinal round. If they get the bye, they will play in the Regional Finals Thursday, May 22, but if they drop to #4 then they will play Monday, May 19 or Tuesday, May 20.


BOYS GOLF

The MHS Varsity Boys Golf team traveled to Winfield for the Winfield Invitational at Quail Ridge Golf Course Thursday, May 8. The Bullpups finished 2nd out of 10 schools, ending just seven strokes behind Independence. Five out of the six Bullpup golfers finished in the top 20, led by Paxton Ingels who finished 5th after hitting 80, just eight above par. Cole Cooper placed in 7th with 85, Kamerson Buckbee placed 10th with 88, and Lawson Ediger & Teigan Younger tied for 15th with 90. Hudson Krehbiel finished 38th with a score of 100.

The JV squad traveled to Hesston for the AVCTL JV League meet Friday, May 9. McPherson placed 9th out of 22 schools. Zane Sporleder led McPherson with a score of 89.

The Varsity AVCTL meet is Tuesday, May 13 at the Derby Golf & Country Club.

GIRLS SWIMMING

The Girls Swimming team closed off the regular season Thursday, May 8 at Newton. The Bullpups placed 2nd in the meet, finishing just 5.5 points behind Marion. The meet also saw 10 top five finishes and two new State Consideration times.

Bree Pickerell, who on Wednesday signed to swim at Sterling College, earned a new State Consideration time in the 100 Freestyle, where she placed 2nd with a time of 59.90. The 100 Butterfly saw the most team success as Adyson Wiens got a State Consideration time with 1:06.39, placing 2nd. Ella Schrag placed 4th (1:13.24) and Roxy Riedel placed 5th (1:19.37). Wiens also placed 3rd in the 50 Freestyle with 27.02.

Gracy Hubbard had multiple top five finishes. She placed 2nd in the 100 Backstroke (1:12.03) and 4th in the 200 Freestyle (2:21.88). Liberty Hampton also placed 5th in the 100 Backstroke with 1:18.69.

Two relay teams finished top five as well. The 400 Freestyle Relay team of Wiens, Liberty Hampton, Hubbard, and Pickerell finished 2nd (4:17.00). The 200 Freestyle Relay team of Wiens, Claire Schmidt, Hubbard, and Pickerell placed 3rd (1:54.16).

The team, who has athletes from McPherson High School, Smoky Valley High School, and Moundridge High School, will now compete for their individual schools. The McPherson postseason begins Friday, May 16 with the AVCTL meet in Hutchinson.


TRACK & FIELD

32 new personal records, new meet records, and 2nd place finishes for the girls and boys teams highlighted the Hesston Invitational Friday, May 9 to close the regular season. The meet was scheduled for Thursday, May 8 but was rescheduled to Friday.

The boys team set records and took home extra awards. Ethan Elder set the Hesston Varsity Invitational meet record in the 800M Run after winning with a time of 1:56.30, which was also a lifetime PR for him. Sophomore Matt Burger was the Most Outstanding Male Athlete after winning the 100M and 200M Dash.

The boys also had top finishes in the 800M as Ethan Elder and Caleb Muehler finished #1 & #2, separated by 0.5 seconds. Muehler also won the 3200M Run by 0.2 seconds. Elder finished 3rd in the event as well. Freshman RC Cornejo won the High Jump.

The girls team had plenty of top finishes as well. Arihanna Koehn, who Wednesday signed to Cloud County CC for Track & Field, won the 100M Hurdles in 15.80 seconds. Koehn also finished 2nd in the 300M Hurdles. Three Field events saw the Bullpup girls at the top: Ellie Herrera won the High Jump (5-5), Andi Buschbom won the Long Jump (17-1.25), and Karsen Burris won the Javelin (119-0).

The team will compete in the AVCTL Meet Friday, May 16 at Buhler High School.
