MULVANE, Kan. – McPherson High School Girls Basketball led Mulvane for the first three quarters, but a late surge by the Wildcats pushed them past McPherson 39-38.
The Bullpups’ defense was the main story of the first half, leading 16-9 at the break and allowing only one scorer, sophomore standout Brittani Peschel, to score all nine Wildcat points. McPherson and Mulvane went back-and-forth in the third quarter, seeing McPherson lead 25-19 at the end of the third.
Mulvane then caught fire in the final quarter, outscoring McPherson 20-14, led by Peschel’s 15 fourth-quarter points, putting them up late. McPherson trailed 39-38 with 30 seconds left, but forced a Mulvane turnover to give the Bullpups a chance to win, but Maryn Sandbo’s potential game-winning three fell short to give Mulvane the win.
Peschel led with 26 points in total, while no other Wildcat had more than three points. Brooke Doile led all Bullpup scorers with 12 points.
McPherson falls to 3-6 on the year, 2-1 against AVCTL-3 opponents. The Bullpups will return to the Roundhouse on Tuesday, Jan. 13 to host Winfield. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
